More is more

Continuing the tradition of annual or in this case biennial website updates, here is some new stuff for those of you paying attention. There are lots of things to see and do in Toronto in the next few days during Toronto design week.

Come check out Associates which runs Jan 26-29, 2012 at Cooper Cole Gallery. I'll have a brand new chair, table and tray on display. The lovely and talented Joy Charbonneau has once again organized some of the best designers in this city and beyond to create works which explore the nature of object relationships.

I'm also going to be displaying the Sum Lounge Chair at Prototype at the Interior Design Show. I'm glad to once again be able to take part in IDS, and hope to make lots of new friends.

There's more! I'm also showing the Cast Iron Table and 15 Light at Domison as part of a show called MOTO, which stands for Montreal Toronto and brings together a great collection of works from designers from both cities. Can't wait!

To top it all off, I'll also be participating in a talk at the Design Exchange called Making It! which sees 20 designers speak for 5 minutes to explain the process involved in one project from start to finish. The Sum Lounge Chair will be looked at from planks to prototype.

Beyond that, Derek McLeod Design will be swinging back into full force in 2012, launching new products, expanding on existing products and playing a larger role in the design scene. After two years of blissful renovations, home is looking better than ever and needs some new things to fill it up.

Thanks to everyone who reads this, visits my site, likes my work and even purchases my work - you all make this worthwhile.

Making things

The Cast Iron Table is alive and kicking down at Heavy Metal - New Cast Objects running from January 20 - 30 at Paul Petro Special Projects, 962 Queen Street West. Go have a look at all of the great new products in this rockin' show organized by Joy Charbonneau and featuring some of Toronto's best designers.

I have also been hard at work on a major architectural project (in my books anything bigger than a table is major...), which has been a collaboration with Joy Charbonneau. It involves a substantial renovation to a typical Toronto home, rebuilding the rear half (see - major), and filling it with exquisite furniture, millwork and details.

Way back in early 2009, I completed and installed a lovely custom bookshelf that occupies the home office of a design professional. The shelf is based on a grid of square and rectangular modules and fills the length of the space while reaching into it's lofty height.

On the horizon is a new table which is based on a minimalist metal frame and is offered with stone or wood tops. The frame is flat-pack friendly for shipping and is available in chrome or a variety of powdercoat colours. More details will be available soon.

A new website?!!

What better way to start the new year than with a brand spanking new website - either that or a couple of new products! 2009 will see the introduction of my 15 Light - a pendant light fixture that will look great in your home, office, restaurant, bar, cottage, you name it. There will be a grandiose launch held at the Gladstone Hotel as part of their annual Come Up to My Room design show, February 5 - 8. The lights are completely made in this province (within an hour of Toronto between all of the suppliers) - a rare thing in our globalized economy. Production has been underway for some time, meaning that the lights will be available for purchase following the show. Work is ongoing on my Aluminum tables which are made from cast aluminum which gets ground flat to within 0.001" across its surface - cool!
